"Alice" Helps Children with Disabilities Adapt to School and Social life

The Competition for Innovations in Education (CIE) has been held for 10 years. More than 6 thousand projects have been prepared and presented during this time. The participant come from all walks of the educational ecosystem: from school teachers and startup leaders to proactive students. In 2023, the competition received 220 applications from 63 regions of Russia and neighboring countries. Various innovations for education were proposed as projects: educational simulators, applications, platforms, devices, board games, events and media, samples for creating educational materials, organizing spaces and interactions, methodological and technological educational resources, and much more.

Alexey Sergeevich Solovyov presented his project that shows how to use the voice assistant “Alice” in teaching children with disabilities. Namely, the project suggests adding learning options to the device. Although the project was presented as an idea, it was highly ranked by the jury and became the winner in two nominations. Both the Maximum Education educational center and the Prosveshcheniye group of companies gave the projects maximum points.

– We suggest the new “Alice” to be used in teaching children with disabilities. It’s true to say though, the device is used extremely rarely even in regular classes! In our project we can create teaching options for “Alice” that meet the needs of students depending on their health conditions. For example, we can design skills for the hearing impaired students, for children with developmental delays, with autism spectrum disorders, and so on, - says Alexey Solovyov.

New skills for the Alice voice assistant will facilitate adaptation of children with disabilities to life in society in a playful way. The device can be used both in the classroom when working with a specialist teacher, and at home by parents when doing homework and additional assignments. “Alice” is beneficial in many ways: it will not get tired or experience emotional burnout; the device can repeat the same information several times without showing fatigue or irritation. Additionally, it can add lots of fun to the learning process by creating heroes and characters that are interesting and close to children. This will certainly increase the effectiveness of their studying.
