NOVOSIBIRSK STATE PEDAGOGICAL UNIVERSITY

The 25th anniversary of the journalism education at NSPU was celebrated with a scientific conference

The organizer of the conference is the NSPU Department of Journalism. The event is dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the journalism education at the university.

The participants discussed skills that are necessary for a specialist in modern media education. This issue has become a key topic for secondary school teachers, university professors, organizations of supplementary education, as well as undergraduates and graduate students who took part in the scientific and practical conference of the Department of Journalism. In her opening speech the director of IFMIP NSPU Elena Yuryevna Bulygina told the guests how journalism appeared at the pedagogical university:

- The year our conference coincides with the 25th anniversary of the journalism education at NSPU. We started this major in 1997: it was initially a special course for teachers of the Russian language and literature. Then in 2000, we had our first applicants majoring "Journalism". It's been 25 years already. During this time, we have educated more than 700 graduates who are successfully working in the media market in Russia and abroad.

The conference hosted more than 100 media educators and journalists from different regions of Russia and abroad: Moscow, Novosibirsk, Tomsk, Saratov, Volgograd, as well as Melbourne, Berlin and Minsk. The participants discussed issues related to the individual’s information culture, the role of artificial intelligence in media education, teaching media literacy in Russia and abroad, and developing soft skill competencies of teachers, schoolchildren and students. The topics were proved to be unique and up-to-date. Another aspect on focus was the historical side of media education, namely children's journalism of the 1920s and 1990s in Novosibirsk, satirical weeklies, media projects on regional history, etc.

- I would like to thank the organizers for such an interesting event, the opportunity to share our knowledge and learn something new. There were lots of interesting topics that raised questions and heated discussions, - says the chief expert of the Research Institute of Information Technologies of the Social Sphere of the Kemerovo State Institute of Culture Natalya Ivanovna Gendina.

An online board with presentations of all the speakers was created as a result of the conference. It helps the participants to share their scientific findings, as well as to get access to an interesting project prepared by the colleagues.

The conference was a unique practice-oriented event. All the speakers shared their experiences. Almost all the leading media education centers were represented there including universities and institutes that started media education even when it was called differently. Today, this experience is broadcast by Moscow State Pedagogical University, ChelGU, KemGIK, Taganrog Institute. A.P. Chekhov and NGPU. All approaches to media education and its methods were included in the general cycle, - says Irina Gennadievna Kateneva, Associate Professor of the Department of Journalism, tutor of the Master's program "Media Education" at NSPU. - At the moment, we have agreed to create joint projects: the formation of methodological laboratories, the organization of inter-regional and inter-faculty media polygons.
