The relationship between Shandong Sports University and NSPU began to flourish following the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the two institutions. During the previous academic year, five students from the NSPU Institute of History, Humanities and Social Development and the Institute of Childhood completed a four-month internship at the Chinese university, focusing on wushu sports programs. Now, their Chinese counterparts are joining NSPU for a similar period to learn about sambo. On September 11, they were welcomed by Sergey Pavlovich Turygin, Dean of the Faculty of Physical Education, along with his Deputy for Academic work Konstantin Mikhailovich Zhomin, Deputy for Educational work Yuriy Aleksandrovich Gref, and Ekaterina Igorevna Barancheeva, NSPU Head of the Department of International Affairs and Academic Mobility.
– At the request of the rector of Shandong Sports University, you will have the opportunity to learn about Russian national sambo wrestling. You will also engage in basketball, swimming, and gymnastics here. If you're interested, you can participate in competitions in these sports. During the snow season, our skilled trainers and instructors will teach you the proper techniques for skiing and introduce you to the sport. When I came to Shandong in December 2023, your university's rector mentioned that China aims to actively promote the development of winter sports, - said Sergey Pavlovich Turygin to the Chinese students.
Currently, the trainees from the Celestial Empire are in the process of adapting and becoming familiar with the university life. Their classes are set to begin on September 16. Next week, they will also have the opportunity to meet with the NSPU rector, Sergey Aleksandrovich Nelyubov. The guests will follow the second-year curriculum of the NSPU Faculty of Physical Education, and in addition, they will be studying Russian for six hours each week.
- We all know that sport holds great significance for both the Chinese and the Russians, and I do believe that at our university, you will have the opportunity to explore new sports disciplines. Moreover, I genuinely hope that within a month, you will become proficient in spoken Russian, making your life at our university both engaging and vibrant. You will have the chance to learn about our city and the culture of our country, participate in NSPU events, and gain invaluable experience. Our administration will be here to assist you with any issues related to your stay in Novosibirsk, - said Ekaterina Igorevna Barancheeva.
Sergey Pavlovich Turygin also reminded the Chinese students of the slogan from the Soviet era: “Russian and Chinese are brothers forever!” In the 21st century, this slogan takes on a new significance, and the NSPU administration is contributing to the establishment of friendly connections between the two global powers.

A Memorandum of Cooperation between NSPU and Shandong Sports University was signed on February 20, 2024. One of the key aspects of the memorandum is the establishment of joint sports training centres focusing on traditional sports for both the PRC and the Russian Federation, primarily sambo and wushu. These centres will aim to facilitate training, enhance the qualifications of instructors, and promote the exchange of experience between both universities in the areas of sports training and physical education.
