Expanding Collaboration: NSPU and Xinjiang University Transition from “2+1+1” to “2+2” Programme

The delegates of Xinjiang University emphasized that this visit was not the first arrival at NSPU and expressed their great satisfaction with the collaboration that has flourished between the universities over the past two decades.

- Our visit today is intended to continue and reinforce our cooperation. It is primarily conducted under the 2+1+1 Bachelor’s degree programme in Philology, which is a highly successful initiative, and now we’re looking forward to its further development, - emphasized Professor Zhu Xiaojun, Director of the Xinjiang Institute of Foreign Languages.

During the meeting, the parties addressed the following matters:

·        collaborative educational and humanitarian initiatives in the teaching of foreign languages (Russian/Chinese),

·        implementation of professional development programmes for Russian language teachers at Xinjiang University,

·        facilitation of academic mobility for NSPU students,

·        collaborative programmes in Philology and Foreign Language Teaching.

Associate Professor Lu Qingmei, Deputy Director of the International Exchange and Cooperation Department at Xinjiang University, highlighted that the primary emphasis of the joint projects was on teaching Russian to Chinese students. However, the Chinese university is also prepared to welcome Russian students to train them in Chinese as a foreign language.

Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Liliya Valeryevna Bezdeneshnykh, introduced a popular training programme “Translation and Interpreting (Russian and Chinese)” which attracts considerable students’ interest. She also mentioned the faculty’s projects conducted in collaboration with Xinjiang University. Elena Gennadyevna Basalaeva, Deputy Director of the NSPU Institute of Philology, Mass Media and Psychology, stated that the institute is prepared to launch a “2+2” Bachelor’s degree programme in Philology with Chinese universities. In general, the training course is divided in two stages: students from China complete the first two years of the “Philology: Russian Language and Literature” course in their home country before coming to NSPU for the final two years. Ultimately, they get dual diplomas – Chinese and Russian ones. A similar initiative is scheduled to commence in 2026 in partnership with the Guangdong Institute of Science and Technology (Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province, China).

The outcomes of the meeting were summarised by Ekaterina Igorevna Barancheeva, Head of the Department of International Affairs and Academic Mobility at NSPU. She also invited the representatives of Xinjiang University to participate in the celebratory events marking NSPU’s 90th anniversary in the autumn of 2025.

- Our delegation would be pleased to visit your university in October this year. NSPU will continue to offer the well-established ‘2+1+1’ programme and is prepared to introduce the ‘2+2’ format. Additionally, we extend an invitation to your Master’s and Postgraduate students to join NSPU: in the spring semester of 2026, we anticipate welcoming two Master’s students from China, while two NSPU interns are expected to visit your university, - stated Ekaterina Igorevna.
